Why All Hair Colour Is Not Created Equal

On February 25, 2016 by Lissa Logan

“Doesn’t all hair color dry out hair?” “But the box didn’t say anything about that.”

Oh boy. When we hear this we know we’ve got some ‘splainin’ to do. As certified hair colorists, we’ve heard and seen it all.

We know box color is convenient, but that’s all it is. Box color is a one size fits all. Designed for a wide range of hair types and shades, there simply aren’t any guarantees that you’ll get the color shown on the box.

That’s why the beautiful buttery shade you love on your BFF looks like orange juice on you. It’s all about understanding the make-up of hair. You must know:

• The natural level of your hair and the underlying pigment
• Skin tone
• Level of porosity
• The use of previous artificial pigments
• Percentage of gray, if any, and how resistant to coloring it may be

What’s even more difficult for us as certified hair colorists is the acceptance among box color users that their hair is supposed to feel like straw! Nothing could be further from the truth.

Box color uses metallic salts, which over time destroys your hair. That’s why it looks like straw. Just think about it for a minute. You know those celebrities that endorse box color? Think of Eva Longoria, Gwen Stefani, and Beyonce.

These very savvy entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to make an easy buck. They absolutely don’t use the box color they promote. However, they do get paid massive sums of money to promote them.

You don’t get gorgeous hair like that with an $8 box of color! These women have stylists that use in salon color to protect and enhance the beauty of their hair.

You do the same! Love your hair as much as we do.
